With Week 9 on the horizon, both Alberta Premier League title races remain wide open. Several clubs are still firmly in contention for top spot, and a handful of key fixtures this week could significantly reshape the standings in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

In the women’s division, Calgary Blizzard continue to lead the way with 17 points from seven matches, but their position is far from secure. Calgary Wild FC U23 sit just two points back, while Calgary Foothills remain within striking distance on 12 points with two games in hand.

A crucial matchup between Foothills and Wild FC U23 headlines this week’s action. With Blizzard not in action, both sides have an opportunity to strengthen their place in the title race. Foothills could move to the top of the standings by defeating Wild FC U23 and Callies United, while Wild FC U23 can close the gap on Blizzard and put themselves in a strong position with a victory of their own.

Last week, Calgary Rangers helped tighten the race by battling back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against Calgary Blizzard at Webber Athletic Park. The result denied Blizzard the chance to create further separation from the chasing pack.

Meanwhile, St. Albert Impact rediscovered their scoring touch following the return of Sariyah Bailey, who had missed the club’s previous two matches. With just six points separating first and fifth place, every result continues to carry significant weight.

The men’s division is shaping up to be equally competitive. Calgary Blizzard and Edmonton BTB SC are level atop the standings with 21 points, although Blizzard have played one fewer match.

BTB SC collected three points last week with a 2-0 victory over Calgary Villains FC, while Blizzard earned a pair of wins to move level with the Edmonton side. Blizzard’s six-point week also showcased the club’s depth, as they successfully rotated their squad between matches while maintaining their perfect record.

Lurking just behind the league leaders are Calgary Foothills. Despite not playing last week, Foothills remain one of the league’s biggest threats with 15 points and two games in hand. They also continue to lead the league offensively with 25 goals scored, while Chanan Chanda and Fraser Aird sit atop the goalscoring chart with seven goals each.

With first place still up for grabs in both divisions, Week 9 could prove to be one of the most significant stretches of the APL season to date.
