Canada’s U-20 Women’s World Cup run highlights bright future for Canadian soccer

Canada’s run at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup came to an end on Sunday with a 2-0 quarterfinal defeat to defending champions North Korea, but the tournament offered plenty of reasons to be excited about the next generation of Canadian talent.

Canada reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 2014, highlighted by a memorable 3-1 victory over France that saw Kaylee Hunter score a hat trick. Hunter finished the tournament with four goals.

Hunter previously played for Calgary Blizzard SC during the 2023 League1 Alberta Exhibition Series before continuing her pathway in B.C., and was among a Canadian squad with strong connections to the Premier Soccer Leagues Canada pathway.

Canada’s run in Poland offered another glimpse at the young talent emerging through the Canadian game and what could be a bright future for the women’s national team program.
